Cargin 4-6 Brídíní Óga 0-8
Last Saturday our senior camogie team did themselves and their club proud in our first Junior championship final in Randalstown.
The wealth of experience Cargin possessed in three current Antrim senior players and four girls who had won Derry senior medals with Castledawson in the last decade, that experience in the end proved too much for our young team.
Cargin got the breaks too, bhthe two goals in a two minute spell midway throught the opening half gave them a firm platform on which to build success.
However we gained a lot of credit with our fightback before half-time to leave us just four points in arrears at the break, 2-2 to 0-4.
Another goal on the re-start however really knocked us back. Nevertheless every girl fought to the final whistle and did themselves proud. No-one shirked responsibility, but the determination and skill of Danielle Scally, Kirsty Laverty, Caoimhe McAleenan, Shauna Kelly and in particular Laoise McKenna – all young players who have bright futures ahead of them – stood out.
This was a disappointment of course, but Rodney, Shane, Fergus and John have moved the team on a huge step this season with consolidation in Division 2 and an appearance in a first championship final. This is a solid foundation on which future success can be built.
