Congratulations to Torie, Kirsty and Laoise who won another Ulster title on Friday night helping Antrim beat Derry 4-9 to 3-8 in the Ulster Intermediate final at the Loup.
Torie opened the scoring with a sweet ground strike to the net in the second minute and added a point later.
Laoise also scored a first half point and got through the usual amount of work around the middle of the field, leading her team to victory.
Kirsty was one of the stars of the first half coming out of defence time and again with the sliotar and delivering great passes to her team-mates.
This was the girls’ third final of the season. Antrim won the All-Ireland Minor title in April and then the Ulster Minor title in May – and no team got close to them in those competitions. The decision was then taken that the minors would represent Antrim in the Ulster Intermediate championship against Tyrone’s first choice Senior team and Derry’s second team. Because of examinations, holidays and some of the Loughgiel players becoming ineligible through winning the Ulster Senior title for Antrim, four more players were drafted into the squad for this competition – Ballycastle’s Kathryn and Niamh Donnelly, Colleen Patterson (Ruairí Óg) and Méadhbh Laverty (St John’s). However from the 17 players used on Friday evening, 10 (including Torie and Kirsty) will still be eligible for Minor next year – so this was a very young team indeed.
The result means that Kirsty and Torie have now helped Antrim win Ulster titles at under 14, under 16, Minor and Intermediate levels as well as All-Ireland under 15 and Minor medals in the space of just three seasons. Not a bad haul with only the Senior one left…. Hopefully that also will come to them.
Laoise hasn’t the same haul of titles, but she has now lifted three Cups on behalf of the Saffrons in 2016!
Congratulations also to Seamas who is part of the Antrim mangement
