Some people are so intrinsically of a place, they become that place. Our inimitable President, Shaun McLaughlin, was one such person. Shaun McLaughlin was Glenravel. He wore the Lord Mayor’s Chain of Office with the same humour as when he delivered his put downs of the great and good at his pub quizzes. No one was safe. No one wanted to be. Known far beyond Glenravel’s boundaries, yet it is to Glenravel that he belonged. Sure, he said so himself :
"These are the hills I dream of now
‘Tis where my mind was made”
His was the public face of a Community come together. His influence spanned decades and as news of his passing spreads, there can be little doubt that it will reach the most far flung of places and that it will invoke genuine sadness there.
We will remember a man of great wit, immense warmth and boundless humanity. We will remember a man who , throughout his life, did so much for everyone around him, particularly young people. We will remember a man who truly and enthusiastically embodied the meaning of the word ‘service’ and for whom the act of giving was fundamental to his very being. His energy was infectious and his love of this Club was without limit. I pray he knew we felt the same way for him. We will all miss him, his guidance, his mischief, the sheer craic of the man. His legacy is all around us. He is the stuff of legend and every inch of this place owes Shaun McLaughlin a debt that can only be repaid in going forward with the same generosity of spirit, integrity and determination as he himself demonstrated every day.
I extend my most heartfelt condolences to Jo, to Gary and Lee and to Shaun’s wider family circle.
"Maginn Park, bathed in sunshine
Is the home of the Con Magees”
As you watch down on us Shaun, we hope to make you proud.
