DIVISION 3 LEAGUE
Wed 4th April Ballycastle 2-4 Brídíní Óga 4-3
Great to get the season off to a positive start – and we have St Brigid’s GAC Cloughmills to thank for the use of their facilities tonight after both our own and Ballycastle’s were deemed unplayable.
This was a good match played in a good spirit and, while there were plenty of mistakes from both sets of players, there were also passages of good play and some excellent skills indicating that both teams have the capacity to finish in the top half of the league.
Caroline drove from Thomastown today to play in the game and therefore had to be the captain! She definitely enjoyed the role, both during the game and – well lets say for a good while after it. She had a good game as well – but gave away a penalty just before the break to make it 3-2 to 2-2.
We opened with points from Oonagh and Justine, while Jade made a couple of great saves before Clara took a good pass from Oonagh and goaled from close range. Justine then scored a good angled solo goal and Oonagh added another and it looked as if we were coasting.
However Ballycastle hit back with two goals and a point before the break.
It was a tough battle during the second half, although Aimee’s goal and a point from Beth gave us a bit of a cushion and the defence really rose to the challenge, several players bringing off good saves.
In the end we had to fight hard for the league points, but we won them. A lot of players played above what they thought they were capable of and that makes a hard fought victory all the sweeter. Congratulations on Ballycastle entering a new team and really putting it up to us. Hope to see you later in the summer again.
